SHOT!
This will (hopefully) be a “quickie” edition (unlike my usual “war-and-piece” epic newsletters), to bring the LSC curtain down on 2019.
I know, I know… I can hear your deafening groans of disappointment all the way from Lagos – which is where I find myself this week. The traffic is mayhem, but at least they have power here!
1. WELCOME:
Firstly, a very warm welcome to our new members who have joined our club since my last newsletter in October.
On behalf of our LSC Committee, thank you for joining, and we wish you many years of fun and fitness with us.
2. TENNIS CLUB CHAMPS:
We held our Annual Tennis Club Champs FINALS DAY on Sunday, and what a day it was!
Thrilling tennis, played in great spirit, in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
The Ladies Singles Cup Final started proceedings and we crowned a new Club Champion, Georgie Gerner.
She ended Tracy Morris’s 4-yer reign as Queen of Centre Court in the semi-finals, and then edged out a very strong challenge from Lize Wessels in the Cup Final, 6-4, 7-6.
Next up was the Mens Singles Cup Final, and again we crowned a new Club Champion.
Clive Barrett oozed class in fighting off a brave, never-say-die effort from defending champ and 5-times winner, Bob Groeneveld, 6-4, 7-5.
STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS!
Georgie Gerner & Clive Barrett
The high standard of tennis continued in the Doubles Cup matches. Clive won his second title, partnering Tracy Morris in the Mixed Doubles Cup, to beat Lizzell Boshoff & Bernard Ross, 7-6, 6-4.
Lizzell then managed to get some revenge over Tracy when she partnered with Lize Wessels in the Ladies Doubles Cup, to beat Tracy & Abby Morris, 7-5, 7-5.
Evergreen Tony Fawcett & Bernard Ross took the Mens Doubles Cup title, 7-6, 3-4 (ret), beating Clive & Rob Picard.
Clive unfortunately had to retire due to a painful arm injury with the match delicately poised in the 2nd set.
We wish our Club Champ a speedy recovery.
It was a fantastic tournament, with 56 entrants playing 95 matches within 5 weeks, and with a record number of tense, 3rd set championship tiebreakers to decide matches.
A big thank you for the great support – from both participants and supporters – and congrats to all our winners.

Linda Boshoff & Ilse Esterhuizen bt Margie Mackenzie & Sue Vith, 2-0

3. RENEWAL OF MEMBERSHIP FEES:
Membership renewal fees for the current 2019/20 season were due in September. If you still haven’t paid your subs, you have until Sunday 15th December to do so.
Sheena will then send Jerry a list of unpaid members on the 16th, who will then deactivate your access key tags and disable your login access to our online booking system.
We hate to resort to such stringent measures, but this income is our club’s lifeblood, and we can’t afford to operate without it.
If you do find your access disabled after the cut-off date, and believe you have paid, then please email your EFT POP to myself and Sheena (@ sheenastephens@iafrica.com), and we’ll rectify it immediately.
If you’re “unsure” if you’ve paid or not, please contact Sheena BEFORE the 15th, and she can confirm for you.
If you do end up finding yourself deactivated because of non-payment, we’d love to welcome you back with open arms and show you some Madiba love and forgiveness, but you will need you to first settle your account, and pay an additional R100 reactivation levy.
4. MAINTENANCE TO SQUASH COURT 2:
We are currently doing some much-needed repair work to the front wall of Squash Court 2 this week. We had to wait until the end of the Sundowner Social League Tournament last week before we could start with the maintenance.
You will see that the court has been block-booked out on the online booking system until Friday evening.
We hope to have it back up and running by Saturday.
5. LOAD-SHEDDING:
I’m not sure how reliable anyone’s crystal ball is at the moment when it comes to Eskom, but I don’t think it’s outlandish to assume that the current load-shedding debacle will continue into 2020.
We may get some respite over the festive season, when a lot of businesses close and the demand on the grid is lower. But come mid/late January, we’re likely to be back to similar antics of regular candlelit dinners.
Our Committee is therefore seriously looking into a back-up solution that will keep the lights of our two squash courts on during outages.
If you are a guru in this field, please can you contact Jerry Nicholas at jerry@go-bet.co.za.
I’ve tasked him to research the best options, and present them at our next Committee Meeting on 22 January.
And that’s a wrap for 2019. Phew!
All that’s left for me to say is a BIG thank you to all of you for your ongoing support of our club, and to wish you and your loved ones a peaceful, enjoyable and safe festive season.
We look forward to enjoying a 2020 with you, filled with lots of fun, fitness and laughter – and hopefully a more stable power grid and national airline!!!
Cheers
Rob
