September 2019 Newsletter

Hi  LSClubbers

Happy Spring to all of you!

What a difference a year makes. We exited Winter 2018 with water shortages still a serious concern for all Capetonians.

Fast forward 365 days: our average dams levels are sitting at over 80%.... and us fickle Capetonians are now complaining that we’ve had enough of the rain.

You just can’t please us!

We move into the last third of our club’s annual calendar, which is action-packed with our annual Golf Day, our annual Club Champs Tournaments for both Squash and Tennis, our AGM, our Sundowner Social Squash Tournament and WP League Tennis.

Read on to get up-to-speed with the upcoming important dates and events, and how you can get involved.

Firstly, a warm welcome to our new members who have joined our club since my last newsletter in July.

Here’s wishing you many years of fun and fitness with us.

Please feel free to contact me at any time should you want to discuss any matter pertaining to our club and/or your membership.

Our club’s Annual Golf Day takes place this Friday, 6th September, at the Metropolitan Golf Course. We’ve had a great response to player participation and have a full field of fourballs.

So a big thank you to those supporting us, and a VERY big thank you to Debs Paul and Kathy Hobbs for all the behind-the-scenes organisation.

Please see my email making an urgent appeal to all members to help with prize donations please.

The second half of the 2019 WP League Tennis season kicked off this past weekend, and all three of our teams got off to a very strong start:-

  • Our Mens Singles team, captained by Bob Groeneveld, thrashed Table View Tornados 14-4
  • Our Ladies Doubles team, captained by Tracy Morris, thumped Old Mutual 12-1
  • Our Mens Doubles team, captained by Llewellyn Snyman, secured a draw against a strong Evertsdal team.

Well done to all of you, and wishing you all a great season.

For new members not in-the-know, we have a very active Social Tennis setup at our club. There are get-togethers on Sundays (weather permitting), as well as many spontaneous games during the week, arranged on the Social Tennis WhatsApp group.

If you’re interested to get involved, please send a WhatsApp message to Llewellyn Snyman on 083 629  2399 and he will add you to our club’s Social Tennis WhatsApp group.

The WP League Squash season ended last week and we’re proud to announce that 2 of our 9 teams won their respective leagues.

Big congrats to our Men’s 5th League team and our Masters’ 3rd League team for bringing home the silverware. We’re super proud of all of you.

Special mention also to our Men’s 16th League team who came oh-so-close, but were pipped into 2nd place in the league.

A big thank you to all our players who represented our club this year. It’s a big commitment and we greatly appreciated it.

Entries are now open for our club’s Annual Squash Club Champs Tournament. The deadline for entries is Friday 6th September. The tournament will start on Monday 9th September.

The Finals Night will take place on Friday 8th November, as well as our AGM.

Please note that in my previous newsletter, I said that our AGM would take place on Friday 1st November.

We have had to move it out by a week as Llandudno Primary are holding a Halloween function at the school on Friday 1st November, and we want to avoid a diary clash.

Look out for my email providing more details on our Club Champs Tournament. Hoping to see a record-breaking number of entries this year!

8.  2019/20 SUBS NOW DUE:

1 September marks the start of our club’s new Financial Year, which means that membership fees for the 2019/20 season are now due.

Sheena will be sending out subs renewals invoices to all members in the next 1-2 weeks. If you haven’t received Sheena’s mail by the end of September, it may be because she has an incorrect email address for you.

If that applies to you, please then proactively contact Sheena at to request your invoice, and avoid your membership being suspended.

2019/20 Fee Structure:-

  • Single Membership:       R1,450          (7% increase)
  • Family Membership:      R1,765          (7% increase)
  • Student Membership:    R700             (7% increase)

A big thank you to Kathy Hobbs for getting our SnapScan system up and running at our club.

As you know, we run our club’s “shabeen” on an honesty bar system, and the feedback from our members is that they often don’t carry cash with them.

So they resort to writing little IOU notes… and these aren’t always honoured. SnapScan will now solve that issue…. assuming you remember your phone! J

The second half of the calendar year for our club is always packed with loads of events. So please diarize these important dates, so you don’t miss out on anything:-

1 Sep:                    Start of new LSC Financial Year; Membership Subs due (expect an invoice from Sheena)

6 Sep:                    LSC Annual Golf Day

9 Sep – 8 Nov:       LSC Annual Squash Club Champs

8 Nov:                    AGM and Squash Club Champs Finals Night

3 Nov – 8 Dec:       LSC Annual Tennis Club Champs

11 Nov – 12 Dec:   Summer League Social Squash Tournament

If you’ve lost/left anything at the club, the easiest way to try and track it down is to contact our groundsman, Clive Moses, on 072 207 6508.

Please note that he only works at the club on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.

That’s a wrap!  Thanks for reading through to the end.

Look out for my two follow-up emails, appealing for prize donations for our Golf Day, and inviting entries to our Annual Squash Club Champs Tournament.
