July 2019 Newsletter

Hi LSClubbers

The first half of 2019 flew by in a blur of fairly uneventful local elections, a royal birth, the ongoing Brexit shenanigans with Boris now leading the charge, and the usual furore around Trump and JuJu with their inane tweets.

I loved The Donald’s strategy to “win friends and influence people” by posting a Tweet calling the Mayor of London a “stone-cold loser” an hour before Airforce One landed in London. Very classy!

On the sporting fields, the less said about our Proteas team’s underwhelming performances at the Cricket World Cup to date, the better! The Springboks at least are giving us something to shout about.

And who will forget the Super Sunday a few weeks ago, when there must have been a few fisticuffs in households around the world, competing for the remote control, as you flicked channels between the Federer/Djokovic Wimbledon epic tie-breaker, and the Cricket World Cup Final’s super-over.

Closer to home, it’s been a very successful half-year for Llandudno Sports Club, with our teams excelling on both the tennis and squash courts.
And the second half of the year is action-packed with loads of upcoming events and happenings. So grab a cuppa or a pint, or both, and lend me your eyes for a few minutes as I bring you up to speed with the latest news.

Firstly, a warm welcome to our new members who have joined our club since my last newsletter in March.
Here’s wishing you many years of fun and fitness with us.

Please feel free to contact me at any time should you want to discuss any matter pertaining to our club and/or your membership.

Congratulations to our Men’s Doubles and Singles teams, captained by Llewellyn Snyman and Bob Groeneveld respectively, who won their WP Tennis Leagues and earned promotion for next season. Fantastic achievement!
Our Ladies team, captained by Tracy Morris, fought bravely all season, and ended off in mid-table respectability. Well done!

The next League Season kicks off in early September. If you’re new to our club and would like to get involved in our league tennis setup, please contact Llewellyn (our Men’s League Captain) on 083 629 2399, or Tracy Morris (our Ladies League Captain) on 083 682 0644.

For new members not in-the-know, we have a very active Social Tennis setup at our club. There are get-togethers every weekend, weather permitting, (Saturdays and Sundays when we’re out of league season, and Sundays during the league season), as well as many spontaneous games during the week.

If you’re interested to get involved, please contact Eric on 083 777 5206 and he will add you to our club’s Social Tennis WhatsApp group.

We entered 9 teams into the League Season this year:
3 Ladies, 2 Mens and 4 Masters.

We’re now into the business end of the season, with all the teams pushing hard for final log positions.

Three of our teams, our Masters 3rd League team and our Mens 5th & 16th League teams, are in with a shout to win silverware. So we wish them all a strong finish in their quest for glory!

If you’re keen to come and support, our Men’s A team have a top-of-the-table clash against Paarl next Tuesday (6th August) at 6:30pm at our home courts. I’m sure they would appreciate some rousing local support.

For tennis coaching, members can contact Mike Lewis on 082 334 9169 or Gareth Smart on 071 675 9563.
For squash coaching, members can contact Vida van Rensburg (063 645 9726), Carrie Lam (083 414 6318) or William Tweddle (074 710 3746)
All of them cater for all ages, genders and skill levels.

Big congrats to four of our club’s Youth Squash players, who achieved their WP Provincial Colours and competed in the Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) during the June/July school holidays.

• Brody Williamson – Boys u13
• Emma du Toit – Girls u16
• Lochlan Williamson – Boys u16
• William Tweddle – Boys u19

Special mention to William’s WP u19 team, coached by our very own Geoff Dods, who won their IPT competition.

Well done to all of you for flying our club’s flag high and proudly on the national stage.

Our Ladies Squash Squad had a fantastic day of fun earlier this month.

The record will state that Sarah Behrens “officially” defended her “unofficial” Ladies Champion title, but the winner on the day was the amazing “gees” that our gals generated, with their fancy-dress costumes and creativity around the format and catering.

If you’re a new female member to our club and want to get involved in our Ladies Squash – which caters for all ages, skills levels and fitness levels – then please contact either Margie Mackenzie on 083 252 2755 or Kathy Hobbs on 073 747 5969.

We completed the re-plastering of the front wall of Squash Court 2 a few months ago. Whilst there is still the occasional “gunshot sound” when the ball hits a few dead spots, It is a big improvement from what we had previously.

We do have grand plans to do a full renovation of Court 2, ideally transforming it into a replica of Court 1. But this is not a cheap exercise.
We have formed a Fund Raising Committee, headed up by Jerry Nicholas, who have already got their creative juices flowing, and are formulating a plan to prioritize this project.

Watch this space for more details….

A big thank you to Kathy Hobbs for getting our SnapScan system up and running at our club.

As you know, we run our club’s “shabeen” on an honesty bar system, and the feedback from our members is that they often don’t carry cash with them.

So they resort to writing little IOU notes… and these aren’t always honoured. SnapScan will now solve that issue…. assuming you remember your phone! 

After taking a European sabbatical last year, Debs Paul, our Chief Golf Day Organizer, is back from her globe-trotting and ready to run another LSC Golf Day. (Thanks Debs!)

It is taking place on Friday 6th September at the Metropolitan Golf Course. The cost for a fourball is R1,800 (or R450 per player).

This is always a great day of fun and socializing, as well as raising funds for our club.

You don’t have to be a competent golfer to enter (“happy hackers” are more than welcome), and entries are not limited to club members.
So invite your friends/family/colleagues/neighbours/strangers to make up your fourball.

This year’s SA Open Racketlon Tournament will take place at UCT on Sunday 25th August.

It’s great fun, challenging your skills levels at squash, tennis, table tennis and badminton – all in one, highly entertaining, very social tournament.

I (together with my sons) have entered it over the past few years, and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

There are different categories for men and women, based on age and skills levels.

I will be entering it again this year with my boys, and invite you to join us. To enter, click on:
