December 2017 Newsletter

Hi LSClubbers

This will be a “quickie” - unlike my usual “war-and-piece” epic newsletters!

I’m typing this whilst camping on the banks of the Berg River, and my lilo and the river are calling me!!

Firstly, a very warm welcome to our new members who have joined LSC in the last month (since I sent out my last newsletter). For those who I haven't had the opportunity to meet yet, I look forward to meeting you soon.

On behalf of the LSC Committee, thank you for joining, and we hope you thoroughly enjoy being a member of our proud and festive club, this year and for many years to come.

Please feel free to contact me at any time should you want to discuss any matter pertaining to the club and your membership.

For our “old-timer” members, if you still haven’t paid your 2017/18 membership renewal fees (which were due in September), you will find that your key tag will be disabled by the end of December. We’d love to welcome you back with open arms and show you some Madiba love and forgiveness, but need you to first settle your account.  Please contact Sheena on 083 453 0357 or to do so.

We’d like to thank you for your patience over the past 6 weeks whilst we’ve been busy with various maintenance projects to improve the facilities at our club.

We’ve completed the work on both squash courts, and the resurfacing project on our Lower Tennis Court was completed this week. The court requires a week for the surface to “stabilize”, hence you will find that it is still not available for play (and blocked out on our online booking system) until Tuesday next week.

Have a look a the attached pics. I’m sure you will be very happy with the end result.

Also, we’ve installed a solar geyser and a rainwater tank system for our clubhouse.

A big thank you to Llewellyn, Carel, Sheena and Clive for all their help in these various projects.

Due to the resurfacing of our Lower Tennis Court, we had to postpone our Tennis Club Championships, which were originally scheduled for November/December.

The tournament will now be played over February/March. I will be sending out another mail in early January inviting entries.

We will kick-off our squash calendar for 2018 with two tournaments:-

-          our club’s inaugural Doubles Squash Club Championships

-          our annual Summer League social squash tournament, which will run up until the WP Squash League starts in early March.

I will send our another email in early January inviting entries to both of these tournaments.

A cursory glance at our club’s Honours Board will show a proliferation of two surnames – Dods and Spear.

It’s a remarkable stat when you realize that over the last 20 years, there has been at least one representative from either the Dods or Spear family playing in the Me’s Cup Final in 19 of those last 20 Men’s Cup Finals – dating all the way back to 1996!

And there has been either a Spear or a Dods winner no fewer than 16 times in the past 20 years. Truly amazing!

And this year was no different, with Blake Spear winning his first title, defeating 9-times winner Geoff Dods in the Final.

So it definitely merited the occasion to get our 5 champions on the court to pose for a celebrator pic. Big congrats to Oly Dods, Geoff Dods, Glen Spear, Dane Spear and Blake Spear. Take a bow, gents! We’re very proud of you!

That’s it. You see – I can be short(ish) and sweet(ish) when I want to be!

All that’s left for me to say is a thank you all for your ongoing support of our club, and wish you and your families a peaceful, enjoyable and safe festive season, and lots of fun, fitness and laughter in 2018.
