March 2012 Newsletter

Hi LSClubbers

And the blur continues. We’re into March... hells bells, it felt like just yesterday that I was tucking into second helpings (or was it thirds?) of Christmas turkey!

I’m actually typing this as I sit at the airport waiting to board the first of two back-2-back 12hr flights to get me to UK and then San Francisco for a business trip. By the time I’m back, recovered from jet lag, re-introduced myself to my wife and kids, and tried to remember which way to hold a squash racquet, we’ll be downing tools for the Easter holidays... reminds me of that Ronan Keating song “Life is a Rollercoaster!”

And it’s been a busy time in the life of our club over the past month too, with lots of social events to report back on, and lots sitting on the horizon too. So let me stop waffling and get to it...

A very warm welcome to our new members who have joined LSC in January and February, and we’ve just had our first new member join in March too. For those who I haven't had the opportunity to meet yet, I look forward to meeting you soon, hopefully at our Annual Golf Day in April (more about that later).

On behalf of the LSC Committee, thank you for joining, and we hope you thoroughly enjoy being a member of our proud and festive club, this year and for many years to come. Please feel free to contact me at any time should you want to discuss any matter pertaining to the club and your membership.

Both our Mens and Ladies teams are on fire! They both have their final league matches coming up this weekend, and both teams are very much in-line for silverware. Our ladies are unbeaten so far this season, and play the only other unbeaten team in their league on Saturday, Tableview. Whoever wins that fixture wins the league, so it’s going to be a humdinger. They’re playing at home on our courts, with matches starting at 1:30pm. I’m sure Maureen and her team would greatly appreciate some rousing local support to cheer them on in their quest for glory!

Our men are also still in contention. They have only lost one match this season, but gave themselves a chance to still win the league by thumping Gardens this past weekend, who were topping the log. Our lads play Edgemead away this Saturday, and need to beat them to stand a chance of winning their league. Good luck to Ant and his team.

Considering that we only resuscitated our tennis portfolio 2 years ago by re-entering the WP League after an absence of over 30 years, that’s a truly fantastic achievement by our Mens and Ladies teams. Well done, and thank you for flying the Llandudno flag high, mightily and proudly.

With the WP Tennis League season wrapping up this coming weekend, we’ll look to shift our (tennis) focus onto our own internal Club Championships, which has become a very popular annual event. I’ll be sending out requests for entries later this month, with a view to kick-off the tournament immediately after the Easter long weekend.

Remember, our Club Champs are open to all members of the club. You do not have to be involved in the tennis league set-up. Social players, and squash cum-wannabee-Federers and Sharapova’s are most welcome, and encouraged to participate. We will follow the same format as last year with everyone being entered into the Cup events of the Mens Singles, Ladies Singles, Mens Doubles, Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles, with Plate events evolving out of those for first round losers.

Should be great fun, so start limbering up, and look out for my mail later this month inviting entries.

Eric Putsman runs mixed socials every Sunday morning, 10am to 12pm. New members are invited to join. Please contact Eric on 083 777 5206 for further details.

Maureen Weimar runs ladies socials on Monday mornings and Thursday mornings. They are proving to be very popular, so, ladies (who aren’t currently involved), if you’re keen to get involved, you can contact Maureen on 082 822 6916.

Thanks to everyone who supported the Summer League, which concluded last week, and to those who joined us for the social braai last week. We had a great turn-out and a lot of fun.

The WP Squash league season kicks off this week. It’s shows the growing depth in our membership and passion for squash that we have entered 10 league teams for the 2012 league season, two more than last season.

- 2 Ladies teams (3rd, 4th & 5th leagues)

- 5 Mens teams (4rd, 8th, 16th & two teams in the 17th league)

- 2 Masters teams (2nd & 4th leagues)

If you are a new member and are keen to play league squash for the club this year, please make contact with the following people ASAP:-

- Ladies liaison: Margie Mackenzie (083 252 2755)

- Mens liaison: Rob Williamson (082 450 7905)

- Masters Liaison: Elisabeth Schneider-Waterberg (072 252 4069)

Good luck to all our teams, and make us proud!

A big thank you to all the squash players who attended the WP Marking & Refereeing Course at the club last week. We had a fantastic turn-out (36 attendees), which Glenda from WP Squash said was the most impressive display of support from any club she could remember. So thanks for that, and let’s hope that the learnings we gained give us a better understanding and appreciation of the rules, and minimises the number of contentious decisions made.... as well as our acceptance of those if we’re on the receiving end. (No names mentioned - Mr Wrankmore...! J ).

I have had discussions with Simon from Hout Bay SuperSpar and he has very kindly agreed to extend his “My SuperSpar Card” Loyalty initiative to LSC members. What that means is that each LSC member will be offered a Spar Loyalty Card, and Spar will give 1% of the value of your purchases (calculated on VAT exclusive amount) back to the club.

That reimbursement will be reflected in our annual financial statement that is presented to all members at our AGM, and my commitment to you, on behalf of the LSC Committee, is that that money will be used for the maintaining and improvement of our club’s facilities.

I understand that some of you may already have My SuperSpar Loyalty Cards, as Simon has also driven this initiative through a local schools programme. It will be your option to decide whether you also take a LSC Loyalty Card, and your prerogative as to how your prioritise allocating spend to the club or your kid’s school.

I had planned to hand-out the cards last week at the Marking Course and the Nauticat social event, but clean forgot to. Both times! Oops! Sorry. I have now placed them in a bag and pinned it up on the club noticeboard

Thanking you for your support in advance.

Our Annual Golf Day is the club’s largest fundraiser each year, and we look forward to your support again this year. It's taking place on Friday 20th April at King David Golf Course. I have attached a poster to this mail with all the details.

Debs – for her sins – is again the Chief Organiser. Please will you make her job easier by letting her know sooner rather than later whether you’ll be entering a fourball... or rather, how many fourballs each of you will be entering! And if you can’t put your own fourball together but are keen to play, let Debs know and she will team you up in a fourball of “minglers.”

NB. The golf day is not just for club members. You are most welcome – and encouraged to – invite your friends/family/colleagues/neighbours/strangers to join you. The more the merrier.

NB. Also, the onus of the day is to have fun, socialise, and raise some money for the club. Knowing how to hit a golf ball is not a pre-requisite! Here’s your opportunity to hack around in a very relaxed, social environment.

Lastly, can I please make an appeal to all members to support us with prize donations. We always have the "usual suspects" who donate prizes each year, but we’ve had a whole lot of new members join, so if you own a business/shop/service/product, please help us in this regard. Prize donations mean we don't have to spend money buying prizes, which allows us to maximise the profit for the club that we can make from this event. Ideally, we'd like donations of sets of 4 prizes (e.g. 4 x gift/meal vouchers, 4 x bottles of wine, etc.), which can then be allocated to a 4-ball. It has always been our aim at our golf days to ensure that every player participating walks away with a prize... even if it is a wooden spoon!

For further details, or to reserve your 4-ball slot, and/or confirm a donation of prizes, please contact Debs Paul on 082 927 7330 or

Wow! What a fantastic evening we had last Thursday. We had a great turnout (70 people), the weather was absolutely perfect , and we witnessed a stunning sunset as we cruised around the bay.

We had the Oscars last week so I’m sure we’re all “Hollywood’ed Out” with lengthy thank you speeches, but it would be remiss of me not to express the following thanks:-,

- Thanks to all those who attended; a great evening was had by all.

- A HUGE thank you to Brenda and her Nauticat team for putting on the special evening for us at a discounted rate, and serving up the yummy braai.

- Thanks to Paul for taking the pics (he’s posted them on our website).

- Thanks to Oracle for sponsoring the raffle prizes – shopping vouchers and Super Rugby tickets.

- Congrats to the prize-winners, and special thanks to Gray Holland who won one of the sets of rugby tickets, and then agreed to sell them to another member with the proceeds going to the club.

- (The less said the better about my wife’s ticket being drawn out of the hat for the R500 shopping voucher and me veto-ing her claiming it as “Chairman’s Prerogative” ! She still has me on rations!!!!! J).

Phew! I think that about covers it. I told you it had been a busy start to 2012, and we’ve got lots to look forward to over the next few months. Thanks for taking the time to plough through this newsletter.

I’ll finish off by wishing all our members who are taking part in the Cape Argus Cycle Tour on Sunday the best of luck, and that the South Easter is kind on you! J
