March 2016 Newsletter

Hi LSClubbers

And in the blink of an eye, the first 2 months of 2016 have whizzed by in a blur.

It’s always a frenetic  time in the life of our club, as we shake off the festive hangovers, re-introduce ourselves to our racquets, run social leagues, sort out our entries for the tennis and squash leagues seasons, and plan the social calendar for the year.

A big thank you to all who participated and supported our popular Summer League social squash league. It culminated last night with a great turn-out for our final round of matches and a social braai, against the backdrop of glorious golden sunset. How blessed we are to live in this little slice of heaven.

My moment of life relief for the week:

I’m not sure how many of you had the stomach to sit through the Oscars earlier this week?

I had half an eye on it whilst catching up with admin, and to say that I found my admin more riveting than the TV screen pretty much sums up my view on it.

But I had to chuckle at the chirp from the host (Chris Rock) when he congratulated Sylvester Stallone for his longevity. Amazing to think that “Rocky 1” (where Sly first introduced us to his character, Rocky Balboa) won the Oscar for Best Film in 1977.  And close-on 40 years later, there was Sly sitting in the front row at the Academy Awards earlier this week, having been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for again portraying Rocky Balboa in this year’s movie release, “Creed”.

And Chris Rock’s chirp:  “Rocky

Back to the life and times of Llandudno Sports Club…. here’s a quick update on the current and upcoming happenings at our club.

A warm welcome to the new members who have joined our club since the beginning of the year. Here’s wishing you many years of fun and fitness with us. I’ve had the opportunity to meet quite a few of you already. For those who I haven't yet met, I look forward to meeting you soon.

Please feel free to contact me at any time should you want to discuss any matter pertaining to the club and your membership.

You would have all received an e-mail from me earlier this week letting you know that Paul Herrmann  is busy doing an audit on our key tags, to ensure that our records accurately reflect the correct tag owners. Thanks to those who did reply. We have made good progress this week.

We still have a number of tags that are either (a) unaccounted for, or (b) in the hands of members who have not paid their membership fees. Paul has now deactivated all those tags. So if you find that your keytag doesn’t work the next time you try to use it, it means that you fall into either of those two categories. Please contact me if/when that happens, so that we can rectify it for you.

We’ve nearing the end of the first half of the 2016 WP Tennis league season. (The second half is played from Sept to Nov). Our teams have been faring well. Our Men’s Doubles team is playing at home tomorrow against Constantia. Matches start at 1:30pm. Next week, our Mixed team are at home (also against Constantia). I’m sure the players would appreciate some rousing local support.

If you’re wanting to get involved in league tennis at the club, please contact Bob Groeneveld (for Men) on 082 320 2258, or Tracy Morris (for Ladies) on 083 682 0644. We have teams that cater for varying skill levels.

Eric Putsman runs mixed socials every Sunday morning, 10am to 12pm (weather permitting). New members are invited to join. Please contact Eric on 083 777 5206 for further details.

For tennis coaching, members can contact Michelle Dutton on 082 497 7540. She caters for all ages and skill levels.

In the past, we’ve held our club’s annual Tennis Club Championship immediately after the Easter break. However, we had a rethink on that scheduling last year, largely based on the experience of the previous years’ tournaments, which we started in mid-April, and eventually only finished with the Finals Day in late August. We found that the amount of public holidays/long weekends in April and May make it disruptive, then there’s the fickle Cape winter weather, and a long break over June/July for school holidays.

Last year we ran the Tennis Club Champs during November and December, and the feedback was positive. So we will stick to that scheduling again for this year. We’ll send out more details closer to the time.

The WP Squash league season kicks off this coming week. We’ve entered 8 teams this year:-

-       3 Ladies’ teams (3rd, 4th & 5th leagues)

-       3 Men’s teams ( 8th, & two teams in the 17th league)

-       2 Masters’ teams (2nd & 5th leagues)

We’re always looking to strengthen the depth in our squads, so if you’re keen to get involved in the league set-up, you can contact the following people for more information:-

-       Ladies’ liaison:                    Margie Mackenzie (083 252 2755)

-       Men’s liaison:                     Rob Williamson (082 450 7905)

-       Masters’ Liaison:               Jacques du Toit (082 510 4952)

Good luck to all our teams. Make us proud, and enjoy!

We’ve traditionally held our Annual Golf Day in May, and somehow managed to have the weather gods smile on us for most of the time. No mean feat considering May is one of the Cape’s wettest months. Alas, last year the weather gods frowned on us a bit more. For this year, we’ve decided to move the golf day to September and see how that pans out. We’ll send out more details closer to the time.

If you’ve lost/left anything at the club, the easiest way to try and track it down is to contact our groundsman, Clive Moses, on 072 207 6508. Please note that he only works at the club on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.

Thanks for reading through to the end.

To those of you riding the Cape Argus on Sunday, here’s wishing you lots of tail-wind and zero punctures. Enjoy, and be safe!
