March 2015 Newsletter

Hi LSClubbers

Eish!!!  And the blur continues. We’re into March... hells bells, it feels like it was just yesterday when I was tucking into second helpings (or was it thirds?) of Christmas turkey!

For those of you who have Irish roots, here’s wishing you a happy St Patricks Day today. Whilst my roots are from Scotland, I am wearing a green shirt today as a show of solidarity with my Gaelic brethren.

The first quarter of the year is always a busy time in the life of our club, as we shake off the festive hangovers, re-introduce ourselves to our racquets, run social leagues, sort out our entries for the tennis and squash leagues seasons, and plan the social calendar for the year. As a community, we’ve also had to contend with hindrances of load-shedding and the dramatic mountain fires. At times, it reminds me of that Ronan Keating song, “Life is a Rollercoaster!”

There are a few important dates to diarise for upcoming events, as well an urgent appeal to members to come forward if they’re interested in representing the club in league squash. So please grab a cuppa and lend me your eyes for a few minutes as I bring you up to speed with the current happenings at our club.

We’ve had 30 new members join our club since the beginning of the year. Here’s wishing you all a very warm welcome, and many years of fun and fitness with us. I had the opportunity to meet quite a few of you at our social kick-off/sundowner cruise onboard the Nauticat last month. For those who I haven't had the opportunity to meet yet, I look forward to meeting you soon.

Please feel free to contact me at any time should you want to discuss any matter pertaining to the club and your membership.

A very big thank you to Brenda Owen and her crew at the Nauticat for hosting our first social of the year, a sundowner cruise and braai last month. We had a great turnout (over 100 people), and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening played out against the backdrop of a spectacular sunset.

We’ve nearing the end of the first half of the 2015 WP Tennis league season. (The second half is played from Sept to Nov). Our Mixed Doubles team is faring the best out of our three league teams, currently sitting second on their log (League 3B), and playing some great tennis. Well done to them.

If you’re wanting to get involved in league tennis at the club, please contact Bob Groeneveld (for Men) on 082 320 2258, or Michelle Dutton (for Ladies) on 082 497 7540. We have teams that cater for varying skill levels.

Eric Putsman runs mixed socials every Sunday morning, 10am to 12pm (weather permitting). New members are invited to join. Please contact Eric on 083 777 5206 for further details.

For tennis coaching, members can contact Michelle Dutton on 082 497 7540. She caters for all ages and skill levels.

In the past, we’ve held our club’s annual Tennis Club Championship immediately after the Easter break. However, we’ve had a rethink on that scheduling, largely based on the experience of last year’s tournament, which we started in mid-April, and eventually only finished with the Finals Day in late August!

We find that the amount of public holidays/long weekends in April and May make it disruptive, then there’s the fickle Cape winter weather, and a long break over June/July for school holidays.

So we’re going to push the Tennis Club Champs out to later in the year, to start in September. We’ll send out more details closer to the time, and look forward to another great tournament.

We ran a very successful Doubles Tournament for our juniors (up to 14yrs) last year. It was a lot of fun, so we’ll be holding another one this year, on Saturday 9th May. I will send out a separate mail inviting entries, but if you have a child who would be keen, please discuss this with them and diarise the date.

The WP Squash league season kicked off last week. We’ve entered 10 teams this year:-

-       3 Ladies teams (3rd, 4th & 5th leagues)

-       4 Mens teams (5th, 8th, & two teams in the 17th league)

-       3 Masters teams (2nd , 3rd & 4th leagues)

We’ve already been hit with a few injuries which is putting pressure on the depth of our squads, so if you’re keen to get involved in the league set-up, please put your hand up. We’d greatly appreciate your participation, be it on a fully committed basis, or a “rescue reserve.” We cater for all skills levels across our 10 teams, and as is the LSC ethos, the onus is on having a lot of fun whilst playing a socially competitive game.

You can contact the following people for more information:-

-       Ladies liaison:                    Margie Mackenzie (083 252 2755)

-       Mens liaison:                     Rob Williamson (082 450 7905)

-       Masters Liaison:               Jacques du Toit (082 510 4952)

Good luck to all our teams. Make us proud, and enjoy!

Please “Save the Date” for our Annual Golf Day, which is scheduled for Friday 29th May. It is our club’s largest fundraiser each year, and we look forward to your support again this year. We’ve held it at King David Golf Club for the last few years, but have opted for a change of scenery this year, and will take be holding it at The Metropolitan Golf Course.

I will be sending out a separate mail with more details, but in the interim for the new members, it’s important for you to know that our golf day is not just for club members. You are most welcome – and encouraged to – invite your friends/family/colleagues/neighbours/stranger to join you. Also, the onus of the day is to have fun, socialise, and raise some money for the club. Knowing how to hit a golf ball is not a pre-requisite! Here’s your opportunity to hack around in a very relaxed, social environment.

If you’ve lost/left anything at the club, the easiest way to try and track it down is to contact our groundsman, Clive Moses, on 072 207 6508. Please note that he only works at the club on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.

Thanks for reading through to the end. Look out for follow-up mails from me for the Annual Golf Day and Juniors Doubles Tournament, inviting entries.

And looking forward to a few members volunteering their services to help out our league squash teams.
