July 2014 Newsletter

Hi LSClubbers

Not sure about the rest of you, but I had to re-introduce myself to my wife after this past weekend, but only after I filed for divorce from my TV remote in the early hours of this morning, after the final whistle of the World Cup Football final.

Well done to the Germans. There was an insightful quote doing the rounds on social media this morning. Argentina have Messi. Brazil have Neymar. Portugal have Ronaldo. Great individual players who grab the limelight in the tabloids. But Germany play as a team – a well-drilled machine, where no single player looks to stand out above the rest of the team. They certainly deserve to be on top of the footballing world. And I loved the pic I saw on Twitter with Angela Merkel super-imposed over the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio. Very sharp!

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s been happening at our club over the past month, and upcoming events and happenings:-

1.  WELCOME:

A very warm welcome to our new members who have joined LSC in the last month (since I sent out my last newsletter in early June). For those who I haven't had the opportunity to meet yet, I look forward to meeting you soon.

On behalf of the LSC Committee, thank you for joining, and we hope you thoroughly enjoy being a member of our proud and festive club, this year and for many years to come.

Please feel free to contact me at any time should you want to discuss any matter pertaining to the club and your membership.

Our club’s membership currently stands on over 185 paid-up members, which is the most we’ve ever had in the history of our club, now in our 53rd year. So thank you to you all for your continued support.

2.  CONGRATULATIONS:

Kenau Vith and William Tweddle made the WP U13 squad, and competed in an Inter-Provincial Tournament during these school holidays. Both boys played extremely well, and their U13B team won the gold medal in their respective competition. Well done Kenau and William. We are very proud of you both!

3.  ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM:

The upgrade to our access control system has finally been completed. The front gate to the clubhouse was completed last month, and both tennis court gates a few weeks ago. The last of the phases, the floodlights to the lower tennis court, was completed last week.

So we now have a far more efficient system, where your access keytag controls all four tag readers – (1) the gate to the clubhouse, (2) the lower tennis court, (3) the upper tennis court, and (4) the floodlights to the lower tennis court.

Please note that the floodlights to the tennis court are on a 60min timer. As soon as you swipe your access tag on the tag reader for the floodlights, a 60min session will commence. If you have booked the court for longer than an hour, you will need to go back to the tag reader and re-swipe to initiate a further 60min.

Please remember that the conditions on which we received approval from the City Council and LCA to install the floodlights are that the usage can’t extend past 9pm on a weekday (Monday to Thursday, and Sunday), and past 10pm on a weekend (Friday and Saturday).

Also, we will continue to monitor the cost to the club of the use of the floodlights. Our monthly electricity bill has increased since the installation of the floodlights, but not to the degree that we feel we need to institute a pay-for-use/meter system. We will continue to review this, and reserve the right to institute such a system should the increase to the club’s electricity bill necessitate it.

For those members who have still not swapped out their old access key tags, you need to do this with Chenay Solomons at the Seeff Properties office in Mainstream Shopping Centre, Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm. If you need to do a swap-out outside of these hours or over the weekend, you can contact me directly, and we can make a plan.

4.  SOCIAL TENNIS:

For new members not in-the-know, Eric Putsman runs mixed socials every Sunday morning from 10am-12pm (weather permitting). If you’re keen to get involved, you can contact Eric on 083 777 5206.

Also, should you want any coaching lessons – for you and/or your kids – you can contact Michelle Dutton. (082 497 7540).

5. THURSDAY MORNING LADIES  TENNIS:

Our ladies have entered a team into the Thursday morning Ladies Social League for the last three seasons, and have done as proud, winning promotion. A big thank you to Kiki Bond-Smith for captaining the team.

Unfortunately some of the stalwarts in the squad are no longer able to play in the upcoming season, starting in late-August. We need a squad of 6-8 ladies for it to work, so we’re desperately looking for a few more ladies to put their hands up and join the squad.

For those who are keen, or would like more information, please contact Kiki on 083 309 0468 or kikibondsmith@gmail.com.

6.  TENNIS CLUB CHAMPS:

Our annual Tennis Club Champs tournament has been in recess (nice Gerry Nel/Barry Roux term, hey?!) over the school holidays. The last of the quarter-final and semi-final matches will be played over the next 2-3 weeks. I will keep you updated on when the Finals Day will be scheduled, as it is one of the highlights in our club’s calendar, with great tennis being served up in front of an appreciative crowd.  It is always a festive, social event.

7.  SQUASH LEAGUE:

We’ve reached the halfway mark of the 2014 WP Squash League season. We’ve entered 10 teams this year: 5 men’s, 3 ladies’ and 2 masters’. At this stage, our Men’s A team, captained by Oly Dods, have the bragging rights, as they are lying 2nd on their log – the highest log position of the 10 teams in their respective league tables. But they’re not going to have it all their own way as our Ladies teams are well-positioned to mount a charge in the second half of the season.

If you are a new member and would like to get involved in the league squash set-up, you can contact myself (for Men’s League) on 082 450 7905, or Margie Mackenzie (for Ladies’ League) on 083 252 2755.

8.  SOCIAL DOUBLES SQUASH:

I mentioned in my previous newsletter that Social Doubles Squash is gaining a lot of momentum at our club. What started off as just a bit of friendly knockabouts involving a few members has evolved into a regular social doubles league on Saturday afternoons that is becoming more and more popular.

Vida Steenkamp is the chief organizer for the Doubles, and gave me feedback that they held a second little inter-club tournament last week involving 6 teams. The next step is to establish a doubles ladder for the club and start organising inter-club events.

Vida has created a WhatsApp Group for the doubles participants. Everyone who would like to be part of the group should please SMS her your cell number and she will include you in the group. The courts are block-booked out every Saturday afternoon for the Doubles events. Should be keen to participate, Vida requires that you SMS her by the Friday evening in order for her to arrange teams and the format for Saturday. She can only accept the first 12 people who respond, due to court and time limitations.

Vida’s contact details are 082 648 6156 or vida.steenkamp@kga.co.za.

Vida – a big thank you to you and the rest of the core Doubles fraternity for driving this with such passion.

9. LOST PROPERTY:

In the event that you leave something of value behind at the club, the best way to see whether someone has picked it up is to contact our groundsman, Clive Moses, on 072 207 6508. Clive works at the club on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and generally puts anything of value that has been left lying around in the club’s storeroom for safekeeping.

That’s all from me. Look out for a mail from me in the next 2 weeks confirming the date for our Tennis Club Champs Finals Day. Look forward to seeing you all there!

Cheers

Rob
