August 2016 Newsletter

Hi LSClubbers

An ideal opportunity for some multi-tasking this morning…  why not crunch out our latest newsletter whilst standing in line to vote!

The last four months of the year are the busiest time in our club’s calendar, so please be sure to diarize some important dates and events that I will share with you in the mail below.

1.  WELCOME:

Firstly, a warm welcome to our new members who have joined our club since my last club newsletter sent out in June. Here’s wishing you many years of fun and fitness with us. I’ve had the opportunity to meet quite a few of you already. For those who I haven't yet met, I look forward to meeting you soon.

Please feel free to contact me at any time should you want to discuss any matter pertaining to the club and your membership.

 2.  MEMBERSHIP:

We’re up to 190 members, the most ever in our club’s history. Seeing as it’s election day today, I’ll don a politician’s hat and interpret that as a vote of confidence that our club is staying true to our promises of delivering a great value-for-money membership experience, and I thank you for your loyalty and support.

 3.  ANNUAL GOLF DAY:

We’ve traditionally held our Annual Golf Day in May, and somehow managed to have the weather gods smile on us for most of the time. No mean feat considering May is one of the Cape’s wettest months. Alas, last year the weather gods frowned on us a bit more. For this year, we’ve decided to move the golf day to September and see how that pans out.

The date and venue is now confirmed: Friday 30th September at King David Mowbray Golf Club. I will be sending out a separate mail in the next few days providing all the details.

 4.  WP SQUASH LEAGUE SEASON:

The 2016 WP Squash League season has entered its last few weeks, and most of our teams are positioned in that “mid-table respectability” slot on their respective logs. We wish them well as they put in a final surge to challenge for Top 3 honours.

 5.  ANNUAL SQUASH CLUB CHAMPS:

As soon as the WP Squash League season has concluded in early September, we’ll move straight into our Annual Squash Club Champs, which will run from mid-September to end-October.

Our Squash Club Champs is open to all members (squash and tennis members, even if you don’t play league for the club), and we encourage as many members as possible to enter. It’s a lot of fun, and there’s many a tennis hot-shot that has tried their luck on the squash court and caused some major upsets!

I will send out a separate mail in the next few days providing more details, and inviting entries.

 6.  AGM:

Our AGM will be held on Friday, 28th October, immediately after the Finals of our Squash Club Champs. The evening is always a highlight in the club’s calendar, with some great squash on display, plenty of socializing amongst friends and members, a fully stocked bar and scrumptious snacks, and our prize-giving. And of course, my riveting Chairperson’s Report!!

 7.  WP LEAGUE TENNIS:

The second half of the 2016 WP Tennis League season will resume in September, and run through to early November. (We’re still waiting for WP to release the fixture lists which will confirm the exact dates).

If you’re wanting to get involved in league tennis at the club, please contact Bob Groeneveld (for Men) on 082 320 2258, or Tracy Morris (for Ladies) on 083 682 0644. We have teams that cater for varying skill levels.

 8.  ANNUAL TENNIS CLUB CHAMPS:

We’ll run our Annual Tennis Club Champs from late October to early December, with our Finals Day provisionally scheduled for Sunday 4th December.

Like the Squash Club Champs, our Tennis Club Champs  is also open to all members (tennis and squash members, even if you don’t play league for the club), and we encourage as many members as possible to enter. It’s a lot of fun.

I will send out a separate mail closer to the time to provide more details, and inviting entries.

 9.  SUNDOWNER SOCIAL SQUASH TOURNAMENT:

We wrap up the club’s calendar year with our Sundowner Social Squash tournament, which will run from early November to early December. It’s open to all members, and is a great way to wind down the year with some exercise and socializing… not always in that order of priority!

I will send out a separate mail closer to the time, providing more details, and inviting entries.

 10.  SOCIAL TENNIS:

Eric Putsman runs mixed socials every Sunday morning, 10am to 12pm (weather permitting). New members are invited to join. Please contact Eric on 083 777 5206 for further details.

For tennis coaching, members can contact Michelle Dutton on 082 497 7540. She caters for all ages and skill levels.

 11.  2016/17 MEMBERSHIP FEES:

Our Committee has voted on the following membership fees for the 2016/17 financial year:-

 Single Membership:       R1,250   (0% increase)

  • Student Membership:   R600      (0% increase)
  • Family Membership:      R1,500   (3% increase)

Sheena will be sending out invoices to all members in early September. We ask you all to pay promptly; our subs are the club’s largest source of income, and we are reliant on it to keep our club operational, and maintain and improve our facilities.

We have been rather lax in the past few years of chasing delinquent payers, to the extent that some members have only paid us in January/February; i.e. 6 months overdue!  Our Committee has decided to make the date of our AGM (28 October) the cut-off date for payments, which we believe – at 60 days – is fair and reasonable. Paul Herrmann will be disabling access key tags and login rights to the online booking system for members who have not paid by 28 October, and we will be charging a penalty fee of R100 to have your key tag and login reactivated.

We hope it doesn’t come to that, but it’s the only stick we have. Please support us by paying promptly.

 12.  LOST PROPERTY:

If you’ve lost/left anything at the club, the easiest way to try and track it down is to contact our groundsman, Clive Moses, on 072 207 6508. Please note that he only works at the club on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.

 13.  THANK YOU TO SEEFF PROPERTIES:

A big thank you to our friends at Seeff Properties, who offer the service to our club as acting as a collection point for access key tags for new members, or for existing members who have lost their key tag and need to collect a new one.

A reminder for the existing members who need to purchase a replacement tag: please do an EFT into the club’s account for R150 BEFORE you go to the Seeff office, and take your EFT POP with you. We do not want to burden them with the added responsibility of having to handle cash. Thank you.

 14.  RACKETLON:

I’ve competed in the Racketlon tournament with my sons for the last few years and we’ve enjoyed it immensely. It’s great fun, challenging your skills levels at squash, tennis, table tennis and badminton – all in one, a highly entertaining, very social tournament.

I (together with my sons) have entered it again this year, and invite you to join us. It’s taking place at UCT on Sunday 2nd October.

All the details are at http://racketlon.co.za/about.html

Phew! Perfect timing! I’m close to the front of the line, and about to go and make my mark.

Thanks for reading to the end. Looking forward to seeing you all at our various events/tournaments/functions over the next few months.

And here’s wishing Chad, Cameron, Caster & Co all the best in the quest for gold and glory in Rio!

 Cheers

Rob
